Must See Sights in Kolkata

Kolkata: The City of Joy

Victoria Memorial

Initial Thoughts Upon Arrival

Wow! Victoria Memorial stands out as one of Kolkata's premier tourist attractions. Although it is located in the heart of the city, once you step onto the grounds, the noise and hustle of Kolkata seem to fade away. Beautiful flower gardens, reflective ponds, and lush trees surround the stunning marble memorial at the center of the property, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Family-Friendly?

Absolutely. We visited with our toddler, and he had a blast running around the grounds and exploring the gardens. The open spaces make it a great destination for families. For the most part, the property is stroller-friendly as well.

Accessible to Most People?

Yes. The memorial and grounds are generally accessible, and most visitors should have no problem enjoying this incredible landmark.

Money / Costs

If you simply want to walk around the grounds, admission is ₹30 per person. If you would like to enter the memorial museum itself, foreign visitors can expect to pay approximately ₹500 per person.

Foreigner-Friendly?

Yes. As one of Kolkata's most popular tourist attractions, Victoria Memorial regularly welcomes visitors from around the world. The process is straightforward, and foreign travelers should feel comfortable visiting.

Overall Impression

Victoria Memorial is a must-visit destination in Kolkata. If you only have a limited amount of time in the city, this should be high on your list, especially if you enjoy history, architecture, or beautiful gardens.

Travel Tips

While you're in the area, consider visiting St. Paul's Cathedral as well. Located just a short distance away, it is much smaller than Victoria Memorial and can easily be explored on the same day. Together, these two iconic landmarks make for an excellent half-day itinerary in Kolkata.

St. Paul's Cathedral

Initial Thoughts Upon Arrival

Another stunning structure just across the street from the Victoria Memorial. It immediately stands out with its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Whether you're religious or simply appreciate history and architecture, the cathedral leaves a strong first impression.

Family Friendly

St. Paul's Cathedral is a great destination for families. Children have room to walk around the grounds, and the calm environment offers a relaxing break from some of Kolkata's busier attractions. The impressive building and open space make it an enjoyable stop for visitors of all ages.

Accessible to Most People?

The cathedral is generally accessible for most visitors. The grounds are mostly flat, and the main pathways are easy to navigate. Some areas may present minor challenges for those with limited mobility due to older construction, but overall it is one of the more accessible historical sites in Kolkata.

Money / Costs

One of the best aspects of visiting St. Paul's Cathedral is that it is free to enter, making it an excellent attraction for budget-conscious travelers! Combine this stop with the Victoria Memorial for a budget-friendly sight seeing day.

Foreigner-Friendly?

Yes! St. Paul's Cathedral is very welcoming to international visitors. English signage and information are available, and many locals and staff speak English. As with any active place of worship, visitors should dress modestly and remain respectful during services.

Overall Impression

St. Paul's Cathedral is a must-visit destination for anyone spending time in Kolkata. It offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and tranquility that contrasts beautifully with the city's energetic pace. Even if churches are not typically part of your travel itinerary, the cathedral's beauty and historical importance make it well worth the visit!

Travel Tips

We recommend to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon for cooler temperatures and softer lighting for photography. And because the cathedral is still an active place of worship, dress respectfully. Then just take a few moments to sit quietly inside the cathedral. You'll likely find it to be one of the most peaceful places in the city!
